One of the most important conversations of today is Globalisation. Creating a united world. But with these drastic technological changes how do we preserve our heritage?
One of the most important things to preserve in Africa is Languages. Teaching our children how to speak their home languages (Vernac) has never been more important.
It’s important for young children to be able to identify their uniqueness but most especially to be able continue speaking african languages for generations to come.

Here we list 4 ways in which we can preserve language and why young kids should speak Vernac;
1. Recording

Children love music and dancing, so listening to music, movies and other media and videos in your home language is a fun and effective way to teach children your home language. These media platforms are major modes of information sharing and a great platform for learning and having fun.
2. Get your kids to attend a language class
Participating in language classes both physically and online is hugely beneficial to keep children’s interest in their home language(s) alive. It is a great platform for them to learn with their peers in a fun and interactive environment. Speaking a language, even if only in a classroom, is enough to give stronger and greater value in the language. Our online classes at Vernac Me will be launching soon, so look out for our announcements and sign up your little ones.

3. Digital Learning
In the globalised world we live in, technology has given us endless access to learning platforms. There is countless fantastic digital language learning platforms that are designed for children. With 65% of children in South Africa agred 3-7 having access to digital tools (cellphones, tablets, laptops etc) Parents should utalise these tool to get their children to learn a new language on the amazing digital language learning platforms that are available. Vernac Me is working on a digital language learning app which will be specifically designed for all South African languages as well as other languages in the continent.

4. Speak as much Vernac as you can
Use every opportunity to speak Vernac with your children. Even if they don’t immediately respond back in Vernac, continue to speak to them and encourage them so that they can build their confidence. Use playtime, movie time, dinner time and any other opportunity to speak vernac to your children to keep the language alive.
